In the future, it's very possible that law enforcement officers will be required to carry some kind of weapon in their vehicle. Prop guns are one solution to this problem, but they are also becoming a more common fixture in movie productions and on television shows. In fact, they can be so useful that they have started being called prop guns rather than firearms. 

These guns are perfectly legal in most of the United States. The only places where they aren't allowed are Chicago and New York City, but those restrictions have been lifted since 2004. The history of prop guns can be traced back to the firearms acts of the late 1790's.    

These acts were enacted for the purpose of protecting American colonists against British soldiers and Native Americans, but they had a loophole: anyone who made or sold a firearm could avoid the restrictions. In fact, many people still do this today. Still, that loophole isn't enough to totally ignore the fact that all firearms were prohibited in 1791 when it was written into law.

Purpose of Making Props

There are countless ways these guns can be used in movies, commercials and stage shows but only a few of them will be listed below.

1.   Police or Security Guns

Police or Security guns for the Emergency services and police departments who have them on hand to use. These can be outfitted with lights and sound effects, then they add real fire power to anything they are plugged into, especially when handling armed suspects in hostage situations. 

2.           Target Practice

These could also be purchased by anyone who needs an extremely realistic prop firearm for their own collection as they feel they have enough guns (such as those seen in Hollywood movies like 'Miami Vice' ). Ex. for learning to handle guns, for target practice to get good with a real gun out of fear it will break the fake one, for movie or TV show props, reenactment events etc.).

3.           Movie and TV Show Props 

The prop guns or blank guns in Hollywood movies and TV shows can be recognized in the dark at 10 paces. They have to look and feel like the weapons they are trying to portray. 

This is why they have a heavy (brass plated steel) barrel, detailed engraving/carving on the body of the gun and are made out of weatherproof material & paint (metal or wood) so they don't rust or get damaged easily. When you have to use a gun in a movie or TV show it is used a lot depending on what scene it's in and that makes the prop rental companies the best place to get these props from. 

They can be bought by users who want something similar for target practice, reenactment events, movies and TV shows that aren't as high profile or for people who just want to own an extremely realistic looking prop gun for their collection.
