Most companies that produce prop guns for TV and movies will have a prop weapon department. These departments are usually very specialized, producing specific types of firearms for many different productions. The department is also responsible for maintaining these guns for reloading on set, just as if they were real firearms.  Some companies focus strictly on making replica or toy guns and do not produce any other type of prop or product. This can be attributed to the quality of their work and the dedication they put into their products to ensure ease in use and safety during filming. In the future, it's very possible that law enforcement officers will be required to carry some kind of weapon in their vehicle. Prop guns are one solution to this problem, but they are also becoming a more common fixture in movie productions and on television shows. In fact, they can be so useful that they have started being called prop guns rather than firearms.  These guns are perfectly legal in most of the United States. The only places where they aren't allowed are Chicago and New York City, but those restrictions have been lifted since 2004. The history of prop guns can be traced back to the firearms acts of the late 1790's.      These acts were enacted for the purpose of protecting American colonists against British soldiers and Native Americans, but they had a loophole: anyone who made or sold a firearm could avoid the restrictions.
